Prior to writing this post, I was intending to go straight into the issues that Jordan Henderson has gone through while in Saudi Arabia but it was brought to my attention that this saga started way before he kicked a ball (thank you Gilad Mensky). Although it didn't change my percerption on the matter, it did nonetheless add some spice to the matter.
To begin with, the reasoning behind his initial move is absolutely ludicrous. Being told that you're not needed after leading a side to a league title after a 30 year wait, Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League success is baffling. A leader who has achieved this should be treasured and protected from everything. They should be treated as immortal, immovable and a vital cog in the machine, regardless of age or injury record. Both the former and the latter have both played a part for Henderson.
His stint in Saudi Arabia couldn't have gotten to worse start. This, however, is all down to him. Wearing a black armband (in place of the traditional rainbow armband) in his unveiling photos was a big mistake. This was because it represents his allegance to LGBQT+ groups. For those who don't know, in Saudi Arabia, homosexuality is strictly forbidden and is punishable by death. Although fans are pointing the finger at the club, I'm pointing straight at the player. In my view, before entering a new country for whatever reason, appropriate research should be done. Even if someone is world famous, it doesn't mean that they are immediately immune to any laws that exist. Rules are rules vis-a-vise laws.
There are several reasons why he wants to leave. The first is a non-issue. This is in regard to his international place. If he is worried about this then clearly he's being ignorant. Everyone who's been following the national team under Gareth Southgate will know that he likes to play favourites. Henderson could have been sitting on the bench 24/7 and he will still be selected. A prime example of this is Harry Maguire. So to me, this is just an excuse.
Other factors include the climate, form and lifestyle. He also wasn't aware of the training facilities. As such, he demanded a new gym. Attendances are also a key reason. He will be surrounded by a crowd of 7 000 - on average. These are not valid reasons but rather excuses.
Everything that has been stated has been nothing but a smokescreen. To me, he misses the days of glory and domination. His current club are far from the top and are unable to challenge for the title. He could see this as an anamoly to him. He wants to work under a well proven manager and not one whose only proven success was in Scotland.
Two European clubs have shown interest: Juventus and Ajax. Based on this season and his "needs" it would be best for him to join Juventus for two reasons: 1) they are challenging for the title and 2) he will be working under a well known and proven manager. Going to Ajax will basically be the same thing in Saudi Arabia but in the Netherlands - performance wise. They are not challenging for the title.
I'm probably being biased in this post but I hope that there are Liverpool fans and symphathisers who agree with me. All top professionals should do their research before making vital decisions. If a person is unhappy and uncomfortable in their environment, they should own up to it and admit it. They shouldn't look for excuses to hide their true feelings and motivations.
