It has taken some time but Rasmus Hojlund is finally scoring goals in the Premier League. This is not his first taste of goals for Manchester United. He had scored 5 goals in the Champions League and a goal in the FA Cup. Since scoring his first (league) goal against Aston Villa, he has been on fire. To date, he has scored 7 goals in 6 consecutive games (and 13 in 30 games overall). By doing so, he has become the youngest (21 yrs, 14 days) to score in 6 consecutive games. He has even surpassed Thierry Henry and the great Erling Braut Haaland in this regard.
His journey began in the capital, playing for FC Kobenhavn [Copenhagen]. He played for them for 2 years. In total, he had scored 5 goals in 32 games. In spite of the relatively low numbers, he nonetheless attracted interest from Austria. He moved to the Austrian Bundesliga with Sturm Graz in January 2022 for a [reported] fee of 1.8 million Euros.
His prospering career continued to rise as he scored 12 goals in 21 games across 2 seasons. This form attracted interest from Italy. He moved to Serie A with Atalanta for 17 million Euros. In the beginning, he was not a regular feature in the side. He found himself being on the sidelines. He received his chances with both poor form and injuries to regular striker Duvan Zapata.
Once these chances came, he grabbed it with both hands. He started to engrave a name for himself by stringing together strong performances in 2023. Part of this included scoring four goals in four consecutive games. This garnered interest from England in Manchester United.
Hearing this news must have brought out a big smile for Rasmus Hojlund. This was because he is a boyhood Man Utd fan. I can only suspect that he would've done anything to join the club. Playing for the club you supported as a child is what every footballer strives for. For his time in Italy, his record read, played 34 and scored 10.
His move to United didn't come easily. Atalanta were hard to negotiate with. A deal was finally struck with a total package equalling 72 million Pounds and on a 5 year deal with an option of a further year. There was a huge weight of expectation that laid on him due to the price tag that was attached to him.
He wasn't living up to expectations in the beginning. He wasn't wearing his scoring boots and was unable to score goals. He was mostly ignored by the wingers. Oddly, he was easily finding the back of the net when it came to European nights. Memes were being made to mock him.
Things have taken a turn for the better for him since the Aston Villa game. The hype of Rasmus Hojlund has been skyrocketing ever since. It is so high that he is being compared to Erling Haaland. His confidence is high and confidence is key to scoring goals and becoming successful. At the age of 21, there is no telling how high his ceiling is and what he can achieve. He could one day even win the Ballon D'Or.
