It has been reported that INEOS want to sack current manager Erik ten Hag and hire Gareth Southgate as the new manager. This appointment would be an absolute catastrophe for the club. It's an unwanted move.
I'm not alone on this matter. It looks like every United fan doesn't want this to become a reality. To me, Southgate lacks proper manaagerial experience. His only experience, apart from the national gig, is managing Middlesbrough between 2006-2009 and the England U21's between 2013-2016.
His statistics aren't spectacular either. He has a win % of 29.8 at Middlesbrough (after 151 games); 73% for England U21's (after 37 games) and a present 61.96% for England (after 92 games). In total, he has managed 280 games, won 129, drawn 20 and lost 83. This leads to a win record of 46.07%.
I don't want to see ten Hag sacked. However, should the unfortunate happen, I would prefer a well travelled and more experienced one. A novice wouldn't be acceptable in my eyes. It would be a disgrace. Hiring one would just bring the club down even further than it originally was. We might as well listen to Cher's song, "If I Could Turn Back Time" and go back to 2013 - when Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
Southgate's trophy cabinet isn't glittering with gold and silver. His only silverware is the Toulon Tournament (an invitational tournament for youngsters). It has been nothing but close calls thereafter. This includes a semi-final loss in the 2018 World Cup; a 3rd place finish in the Nations League; runner up in the 2021 (2020) Euros and a quater-final finish in the 2022 World Cup.
Another factor is the way he plays and the players he picks. He tends to play in a pragmatic manner and he likes to play favourites - even if they are out-of-form. He often gets criticised for these actions. He also tends to ignore other players who are performing well. This type of manager is not to my liking.
Luckily, as of this writing, Southgates has rubbished these reports. However, this is football and anything can happen. I hope nothing more comes from this. It would be bonkers to put Southgate in charge of a historic club.
